SALVADOR DALI
EROTIC DRAWING 1931
The famed Surrealist Salvador Dali has created many notable images that could be included under the rubrique of 'pornographie visionnaire'. Of particular interest is this early drawing, since it clearly manifests his desire to profane the sacred by use of the sexual. In other words, he wishes to obliterate in his mind whatever power the 'proper' images of the sacred may have, by combining them with 'improper' images of the purely pornographic. Thus, on the left, a man vomits into the chalice and, on the right, the crucified is sexually stimulated. The resulting images attempt to provoke, at one and the same time, our shame and arousal.
Of even greater interest is an image from the same period, which shall conclude our series of examples. It is unique, in so far as it offers a brief foray into 'the abstract'. Here Dali, an admitted Onanist, sought to display in his work, not the image, but the response to Visionary Pornography. Through a series of 'doodles' drawn while masturbating, he sought to transcribe his nervous response to the images uprising in his brain. As a result, we find ourselves imagining, unwillingly, what situation could possibly have produced these troubled, nervous scribblings.
