"I entered ever more deeply into the realm of heremetic motifs - an art... dedicated exclusively to the contemplation of the world of images in the Platonic sense. It adherents were to be found only in the obscure groups of outsiders... Scattered through many countries, they were members, as I understood it, of a secret lodge: the Masonic Order of Visionaries."
When Ernst Fuchs wrote these words in 1976, he had no idea that a monastery, of sorts, was being built out in the desert. Hundreds of artists, from disparate lands, were slowly banding together, and forming once more the forgotten Order of Visionaries.
Working alone in their studios, conjuring forth images from the depths of their reveries, they were creating works which bore strange resonances with one another. Though disparate in style, undeniable traces of affinity could be found, marking them as visionaries. Yet, except for the occasional chance encounter, or expressly setting out on a pilgrimmage to meet, dine, and discuss - most visionary artists remained, like alchemists, locked away in their studios.
Recently, this has all changed. Artists have begun to form groups in different lands. Magazines have been launched, websites created, and even galleries have been founded to exclusively promote Visionary art. The internet, I think, has had no small part in all of this.
Through the VISIONARY REVUE, I hope to create a meeting place where insights into visionary art can be shared, experiences recounted, and points of interest discussed. Not only artists and writers, but poets, addicts, and other deranged persons,
